A FedEx executive must transform himself physically and emotionally to survive a crash landing on a deserted island (www.imdb.com/title/tt0162222/).

Chuck Noland's name can be abbreviated as 'C. Noland' or "see no land".

When Noland squats on the ground, contemplating an item that has washed up on shore, the shot is composed as an homage to 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), reportedly Tom Hanks' favorite film.

Actual lines of dialogue were written for Wilson the Volleyball, to help Tom Hanks have a more natural interaction with the inanimate object.

To see the island that Cast Away was filmed on, put -17.609277,177.0397 into Google Maps and zoom in all the way on satellite mode. The beach that Tom Hanks writes HELP on and sees from the peak is the eastern most part of Monuriki, Fiji.

Contrary to popular belief, FedEx did not pay the filmmakers anything for their presence in the movie. The director has made this clear in a number of interviews. While FedEx was very concerned when they heard about the project, they had no objections to the finished script and offered support during filming, with the company later stating that the movie was very good for FedEx business in general and in overseas markets in particular.

Virtually all the sound, including dialog, in the scenes on the island - about an hour and a half of screen time - had to be replaced in post-production. Sound man William B. Kaplan made a valiant attempt at getting usable sound on the island, but the nearby surf made it impossible, given that many of the scenes needed to be very quiet.
...
Most of the nighttime scenes on the island (except the creation of fire scene) were shot during the daytime. The darkness and night sky effects were added in post-production.
...
The song Chuck sings after successfully creating the fire is "Light My Fire" by The Doors.
...
The license plate on Chuck's car reads: KAZ 2AY.
...
When Chuck and Kelly are curled up on the couch just before Christmas, the camera pans down the fireplace mantle, and you briefly see a basic sailing certification diploma that Chuck had earned. This explains why Chuck knows how and when to use his raft and sail at the right time through the surf.
...
At the end of the film, when Chuck Noland is delivering the unopened package to the artist who sent it, the song playing in his car is Elvis Presley's "Return to Sender".
...
On the plane ride home, Chuck is offered a cup of ice, and Dr. Pepper. An obvious reference and nod to the previous Robert Zemeckis/Tom Hanks project Forrest Gump (1994) (www.imdb.com/title/tt0162222/trivia?ref_=tt_trv_trv).

When Chuck is on the island opening the packages, when he opens the ice skates, you can clearly see the boom mic and operator in the reflection of the skate.

When Chuck is getting out of the jeep at the airport before his fateful flight, he closes the driver door twice.
...
When Chuck Noland is in the airplane prior to the crash, he is wearing khaki pants. After the plane crashes by the island, when he wakes up on the beach on the island, he is wearing black pants.
...
When Chuck throws the volleyball, it is still in its packaging. But in an earlier scene while he is holding the ice skates, the ball is seen out of its box and loose on the ground.
...
When Chuck throws the boxed volleyball with his bloodied hand after the failed attempt to create fire, the box is right-side-up; since he bends down to pick it up, this means that the fingertips should be pointing down on the ball. However, when he looks at the ball soon after, the box is upright but the fingertips are pointing upwards.

Chuck cuts the toes off of Albert's shoes. When he enters the cave for the first time, the toes aren't cut out.
...
Chuck is wearing Albert's shoes and the toes of the shoes have been cut off so they would fit Chuck. But, there is absolutely no way Chuck could have cut those shoes. At that point on the island he hadn't opened the ice skates up yet, and even if he had they still wouldn't have been sharp enough to cut through the strong leather of the shoes. When Chuck is wearing them and they show a close up of the shoes, it's a very smooth, nice clean even edge were they were cut. It just was not possible for Chuck to have made that cut to alter those shoes.
...
The plane that Chuck was on took off from Memphis, and crashed somewhere in the South Pacific. But at the end of the movie, he delivered the FedEx package he didn't open on the island to an address in Texas. While it seems odd that a package bound for Texas would be on an international flight from Memphis, the woman who lived there was actually the sender of the package and Chuck was returning it to her (hence the soundtrack playing Elvis Presley's "Return to Sender" when he's driving there). The same woman had sent a package at the beginning of the movie to her husband in St. Petersburg, Russia, with similar golden wings painted on it.

When the whale watches Chuck aboard the raft and dives, his body just fades out, leaving no swell in the water, revealing the whale to be CGI (www.imdb.com/title/tt0162222/goofs?ref_=tttrv_sa_1).

We chose Kona Brewing Co. Castaway IPA to drink with the Cameron Crowe’s ALOHA because in addition to the obvious reasons, it’s brewed in Hawaii and. It’s delicious.
Kona Brewing Co. was established in 1995 by the father and son brew team; Cameron Healy and Spoon Khalsa.  The company abides by the ideals that: “The future depends on how individuals and businesses treat the Earth”.  The efforts that Kona Brewing Co. takes for creating a sustainable and high quality craft beer are extensive and admirable. They actually employ a Sustainability Coordinator to ensure that nothing usable goes to waste.  Castaway IPA is a newer addition to their Craft Beer line up (www.filmcraftbeer.com/aloha-and-kona-castaway-ipa/).
Take a sip of this copper-colored India Pale Ale and you’ll taste bold, citrusy hops with a touch of tropical mango and passion fruit, balanced by the rich caramel malts. Castaway IPA has a clean, crisp finish that’s as refreshing as the wind in your face when you set sail for adventure (http://konabrewingco.com/blog/beers/castaway-ipa/).

GuideDogSaint (1021) - Xiamen, CHINA - APR 17, 2016
355ml bottle at Beer Station, Xiamen. Pours hazy golden yellow with a white head. Aroma of pine, citrus and tropical fruit. Bittersweet finish. Lacking something but drinkable enough (www.ratebeer.com/beer/kona-castaway-ipa/17371/).

brucebruce81 (356) - Wyoming, USA - APR 15, 2016
This was a very hoppy IPA that really punched your palate right up front and then smoothed out at the finish. It was lacking on the Malts but was not terrible (www.ratebeer.com/beer/kona-castaway-ipa/17371/).

Got this at the AH.
From a bottle into a snifter
Best before 26 January 2017
APPEARANCE: Pours a 1+ finger, medium looking, fluffy, bright white head with great retention. Perfectly clear amber in color with lower levels of carbonation. Maybe a bit too clear for the style. Head slowly fades to a full wispy cap and clings to the glass. Splotchy wisp remains leaving lots of clingy lacing down the glass as it empties. Love the head and lacing, but the body is a bit too clear for my liking.
SMELL: Pale malts, caramel, honeydew melon, cantaloupe, and a bit of pineapple. Citrus aromas with lemon as well. Bold and very fruity.
TASTE: Pale malts, caramel, honeydew melon and some floral notes up front. Bitterness at the swallow with caramel, toffee notes, melon and hints of pineapple lingering on the palate. Lots of floral bitterness and grassy flavors linger and linger. Bold and plenty bitter.
PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. Very creamy and crisp on the palate, goes down smooth and finishes slightly dry. Plenty of bitterness lingers.
OVERALL: Good stuff. The look is very, very clear, which is a little weird for the style maybe, but the feel is great and the rest of the package is good as well. The flavor might not meet the citrus and fruity tones that the nose had advertised, but it's still enjoyable (www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/579/8411/).

kevINSIGHT, Mar 15, 2016
Fairly weak for an IPA, but not bad. Pours a slightly hazy gold with a quickly dissipating white foam head. Slight evergreen hops aroma, not sweet citrus or fruit. Some bitter hops aftertaste, but not much. Not a bad beer, but not very distinct as an IPA (www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/579/8411/).

Kona Brewing’s Castaway IPA Gets Bottled
If you live in Hawaii, or have vacationed here, you may have had the chance to try Kona Brewing Company’s Castaway IPA. It’s one of the few beers that you could pretty much only find in Hawaii. That’s about to change as Kona Brewing plans to release Castaway IPA to all of its markets in mid April.
Castaway IPA will be available year-round in bottles and draft. It is being termed as a Hawaiian-style IPA. The draft version I’ve had in the past has had a clean and light malt base that allows the tropical and citrusy hops take the show. Castaway IPA is definitely very sessionable because of its lower above (6.0%) and light body.
Kona’s brand new Brewmaster Billy Smith shared, “IPAs are one of the fastest-growing segments in today’s craft beer industry, and we think mainland craft beer lovers will appreciate how distinctive Castaway is from many current IPA offerings. The citrus, tropical and mango influences combine with what you’d expect from a typical IPA to create a drinking experience that takes you back to the islands.”
Castaway IPA specs:

Style:                        Hawaiian-style IPA
ABV:                         6.0%
Bitterness:             55 IBU
Hops:                       Galaxy, Citra, Simcoe, Millennium
Release date:        April 14, 2014

ZO'n echt Amerikaanse hopgeur.

Wilson, meet Castaway from the shores of Oahu
My Tasting Notes:
A great aroma of passion fruit and pineapple fill the air when Castaway IPA is poured into a glass. Up front you get a nice hoppy bitter taste, but it doesn’t last long. What lingers is a nice tropical fruit flavor that masks the bitterness.
I would recommend this beer to a new explorer. However, a developed beer palate would call this beer a session type IPA. Castaway lacks a little of the IPA flavor profile that you would normally taste in an American IPA.
Pros
This is a ridiculously refreshing beer with a perfect blend of fruit, bitterness and hoppy notes. The fruit notes are not overly sweet and go well to a palate that enjoys more tartiness.
Cons
Castaway isn’t really an IPA and it lacks a little maturity in hoppy flavor that you would expect in an Indian Pale Ale. But, this beer was just recently released and I believe it will only get better with future editions (http://www.confessiongirl.com/castaway-ipa-beer-review-and-food-pairings/#.Vz94z_mLS70).

...
Appearance: Clear and golden verging on bronze, with a thick white head that laces the glass as it empties
Aroma: Orange peel, tangerine, some pine, bit of cooked cereal sweetness
Mouthfeel: Light to medium bodied with a bit of hop oil slickness and smooth carbonation.
Overall impression: There would be worse options if you wound up alone on a deserted island with only this beer to keep you company. (Interestingly the sample that arrived in the office from the brewery had two bottles tucked inside a deflated Wilson volleyball with that famous bloodied—not real—handprint featured in the Tom Hanks movie.) This is about what you’d expect from a middle-of-the road IPA. It’s not a hop bomb but it’s not grainy. It has balance, flavors that reveal themselves but are mostly happy in the background. It’s a beach beer for sure. Something to quaff while you don’t have a care in the world. It doesn’t intrude on that state of mind. One thing that I really like about this beer is the bottle. A torpedo-shaped brown glass with a raised map of the Hawaiian Islands embossed up towards the neck. Although they have a brewery in Hawaii, the beer we get here on the mainland is produced at partner breweries in the Pacific Northwest and in New Hampshire. Still, for the time it takes to consume 12 ounces, having the thought of “Liquid Aloha” it’s a nice escape indeed (http://allaboutbeer.com/review/castaway/).
