Brad Pitt

01/09/2016 (www.birrificiodelducato.it/default?lng=it)

“When you have insomnia you’re never really asleep… and you’re never really awake.”

Ferris (12747) - Burnaby, British Columbia, CANADA - OCT 1, 2016
Bottle - Smoke, peat and some acidic notes. Cloudy gold with a small white head. Lots of wood and peaty notes, nice acidity and a long woody finish. If you like peat, an extraordinary beer  (www.ratebeer.com/beer/birrificio-del-ducato-brett-peat-daydream/232876/)..

fiulijn (19160) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - SEP 6, 2016
Bottle from Denman Wine and Spirits, Vancouver
Cloudy bright golden color. Weird aroma, smoke and citrusy fruits, acidic. The mouthfeel is very carbonated, rather dry, lemony, with an interesting peaty side.

daje (3999) - NORWAY - JUL 3, 2016
On tap at Cafe Sara, november 13th 2015. Orange body with a tiny white head. Aroma is leathery with peat and sour berries - strange. Taste is fruity, oak, horseblanket, mild smoky with a sour citric edge. Kind of a strange brew, which gives itself given the blend, but it actually works quite well  (www.ratebeer.com/beer/birrificio-del-ducato-brett-peat-daydream/232876/).

Leighton (18529) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - JUN 16, 2016
Bottle shared in East Croydon - many cheers to Danny Boy. Pours hazy gold with a creamy, white head. Smokey aroma with lemony undertones, with just hints of funk. Quite acidic, fairly dry, lemony, with some dry band-AIDS, hard grassy bitterness. Medium bodied with spritzy carbonation. Finishes with rubbery peat, more harsh grassy bitterness, acidic lemon bite, more band-aid. Novel, but not hugely drinkable  (www.ratebeer.com/beer/birrificio-del-ducato-brett-peat-daydream/232876/).

Tja, ik vond 'm erg zuur. Het rokerige was vooral in het begin.

TASTE & TEXTURE: Acidic. Peat is definitely present, as is the titular brettanomyces and its concomitant funkiness. No overt Scotch whisky here, but there is a touch of indistinct dampened wood.
Balanced in spite of being a blend, but not gestalt in spite of its impressive cohesion. Depth of flavour is nice.
It just doesn't deliver on the Scotch, which is disappointing. I'd like more peat, more wood, and more complexity in general. The funkiness is nice, though, and doesn't clash with the peat the way you might anticipate. The now-tired cliche of "sweaty gym sock" does come to mind.
Smooth, wet, medium to full-bodied, well carbonated, and oddly refreshing. Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, harsh, rough, or scratchy.
Sourness isn't pucker-inducing, maybe a 6/10 in terms of intensity. This will satisfy sour fans, and I'm unsure how they're accomplishing this level of sourness if all they're using is brettanomyces bruxellensis - though I guess brettanomyces lambicus is a possibility?
OVERALL: An interesting beer and a bold attempt at combining two flavour profiles you might think would clash. As innovative an offering as it is, it's not the glowing success I hoped for, but it is evidence Del Ducato has some talented blenders. Worth trying once, though its price point isn't really reasonable (in classic Italian microbrew fashion). Drinkable and enjoyable, and certainly a welcome change from the insipid-or-worse pale lagers ubiquitous in its country of origin (www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/16043/105246/).

Excited to try it because it's bizarre, and because I love Ducato and Italian beers.
From the bottle:
"Brett Peat Daydream is a blend
of three different beers:
1. a Peated Barley Wine Style Ale, 2. a Rauch Märzen
with a part aged in Scotch Whiskey barrels, 3. a
Brett Ale wich (sic.) has inoculated with Brettanomyces
before a six month maturation in a steel vessel."
It smelled like burnt pencils, a little bit of old green tea leaves left outside in a shallow puddle of stagnant water, and a smidge of faint sourness.
The taste is very sour at the start, kind of mellows into a very faint smokiness, then you get the little sweetness of the "barleywine", but the strong irregular sour character lingers the entire time.
The aftertaste loses most of the sourness, hangs on to the smokiness for a bit and ends on a bit of a sweet note.
Overall, a truly bizarre beer, but what else do we expect from Birrificio del Ducato? Glad I tried it, just wish I was still in Italy so I didn't have to pay anywhere from $10 to $20 for each tiny bottle of these curiosities (www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/16043/105246/).
