Hop breeding has been carried out in Europe since the beginning of the 20th century. The initial incentive was the increased occurrence of fungal diseases, which led not only to fears amongst hop growers for their crops but also amongst brewers for their raw material supplies.
Although this is now more than 100 years ago, hop breeding has lost none of its relevance for the present – in fact, quite the contrary. Resistance to diseases and pests is only one goal of hop breeding nowadays. Increasing the yield and brewing quality play an equally important role. In relation to the latter in particular, it is the compounds i.e. the proportion of different hop oils, which are attracting increasing attention – and not just since the advent of Flavor Hops.

The different hop varieties are characterized by their distinctive hop aroma profile which sets them apart. It is this "spice" from the hops that provides a perfect balance with the malt and other flavour components that defines a beer style. Flavour Hops is a word creation to describe newly planted varieties in the US and Australia that have been bred and planted in hop fields in response to demand from the US craft beer industry and its desire for bold tastes and differentiating flavours.
Because these varieties are designed to impart bold, new and differentiating flavours on beer, they do not easily fit in the classical categorization of "aroma" or "bitter" hops, but rather have become their own new category we described as Flavour Hops. Unlike aroma hops or bitter hops they are neither associated with low or high alpha contents, nor low or high yield. Some Flavour Hops can show good agronomics and can have a high amount of alpha, but these characteristics are not the distinguishing features that set these hops apart.
Flavour is in the eye of the beholder and is something that is difficult to quantify and as result is difficult to compare. The characteristics of Flavour Hops are usually associated with tropical and fruity notes, however, these notes are difficult to capture completely with the analytical methods in use by the hop and beer industry such as HPLC and GC.
Thus it will be difficult to scientifically define the category of Flavour Hops. We believe that aroma hops as well as bitter hops can be considered Flavour Hops. Craft brewers use hops in quantities that are often unimaginable for German tastes. The result in the
USA: American craft brewers required almost as great a quantity of hops from the 2012 crop as the

Accordingly, growers who supply the varieties sought by the craft brewers are euphoric, but the vast
