The adventures of a secret agent armed with almost infinite scientific resourcefulness.
Creator: Lee David Zlotoff (www.imdb.com/title/tt0088559/)
MacGyver was unlike secret agents in other television series and films because, instead of relying on high-tech weapons and tools, he carried only a SwissArmy knife and duct tape but never a gun....This also led to the verb, "to MacGyver". "MacGyverism" was first used by Joanne Remmings (played by Pamela Bowen) in the third episode of Season 2. When MacGyver introduces himself to her, she uses the term in a manner that suggests other people had used it before:
"Oh I've heard about you! You're the guy who does the whatchamacallits, you know, MacGyverisms; turns one thing into another?"
In an 1989 interview with Richard Dean Anderson, Arsenio Hall said that he had heard the word MacGyver used as a verb meaning "to do the impossible." Anderson then used it as an adjective meaning "impossible." Anderson stated that his show's producers had just missed out on getting the word "MacGyverism" entered into the Webster's Dictionary...."MacGyver" has become a verb, as in "The car broke down but he MacGyvered a fix to get home", and was even used in Stargate SG-1, a later show featuring Richard Dean Anderson as a protagonist (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacGyver).
The "MacGyverisims" shown in the series are all based on scientific fact, but not all of the steps needed to create the experiment were shown. This was done to prevent children who were watching the show from duplicating the experiments themselves and possibly getting injured....In the late 1980s, two teenage boys made a bomb in their garage which went off, killing one of them. The surviving boy said they learned how to make the bomb from an episode of the show. However, the show was quickly exonerated after it was discovered no such episode existed (www.imdb.com/title/tt0088559/trivia?ref_=tt_ql_2).
MacGyver: If I had some duct tape, I could fix that.
MacGyver: A paperclip can be a wondrous thing. More times than I can remember, one of these has gotten me out of a tight spot.
Pete: His name is MacGyver. He can fix anything. He could fix a computer with a hairpin and a piece of duct tape. (www.imdb.com/title/tt0088559/trivia?tab=qt&ref_=tt_trv_qu)
The show follows secret agent Angus MacGyver, played by Richard Dean Anderson, who works as a troubleshooter for the fictional Phoenix Foundation in Los Angeles and as an agent for a fictional United States government agency, the Department of External Services (DXS). Educated as a scientist, MacGyver served as a Bomb Team Technician/EOD during the Vietnam War ("Countdown"). Resourceful and possessed of an encyclopedic knowledge of the physical sciences, he solves complex problems by making things out of ordinary objects, along with his ever-present Swiss Army knife. He prefers non-violent resolutions and prefers not to handle a gun.
The series was a moderate ratings success and gained a loyal following. It was popular in the United States and around the world. Two television movies, MacGyver: Lost Treasure of Atlantis and MacGyver: Trail to Doomsday, aired on ABC in 1994. A spin-off series, Young MacGyver, was planned in 2003, but only the pilot was made. Merchandise for MacGyver includes games and toys, print media and an original audio series. A feature film based on the series is being developed (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacGyver).
Angus MacGyver
MacGyver's given name was not revealed until near the end of the show in "Good Knight MacGyver: Part 2". It was originally Stace MacGyver (according to the script for the pilot). Nobody used the name during the pilot; when it slipped out and became general knowledge to the fans, it was decided to just call him "Mac" or Macgyver" for the duration (www.imdb.com/title/tt0088559/trivia?ref_=tt_ql_2).
(https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacGyver). However, MacGyver is willing to use an acquired gun, its parts, or its bullets in non-standard ways, such as a substitute for a wrench. There are three exceptions when he uses a gun for its original intended purpose: in the pilot episode, MacGyver is seen firing an AK-47 on a mission in the opening gambit (7:51 into the episode); he holds two kidnappers at gunpoint in the opening scene of episode 10, season one; and, is seen using a gun in the TV movie Trail to Doomsday. He is often suspicious of militaristic attitudes within the government; he sees the Los Angeles-based Phoenix Foundation, his employer, as an alternative to more conventional (and violent) means of law enforcement.
MacGyver's family is rarely seen. His grandfather appears in a few episodes. In a flash back during the episode "Phoenix Under Siege" S2E11, MacGyver's grandfather talks to his wife and MacGyver talks to his father. In the second to last episode (The Stinger), it is revealed that he has a son he never knew about, and in the end the two of them ride off into the sunset on a motorcycle (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacGyver).
MacGyver: For the past seven years I have done nothing but travel around the world getting shot up, locked up, blown up... and all I have to show for it are a couple of empty rolls of duct tape.
MacGyver's Swiss army knife went through a few changes over the early episodes. His first and most often used knife was a "Spartan" model from Victorinox. The knife seen in the opening credits of each episode was a Wenger, as noted by its long keychain (www.imdb.com/title/tt0088559/trivia?ref_=tt_ql_2).
As part of the 100th episode celebrations all cast and crew of MacGyver where issued with a specially printed 11 function Swiss Army Knife. Unfortunately the knife was actually an imitation model made by Barlow Knives and not a genuine Victorinox or Wenger Swiss Army knife (www.macgyveronline.com/pages/100thsak.html).
The man. The myth. The mullet. Sunday, May 23, Discovery Channel honors the man with the ultimate MYTHBUSTERS spirit, MacGyver, with a repeat airing of one of the series' most popular episodes, MacGyver Myths. Airing at 10PM, the episode airs as part of an all-day MYTHBUSTERS Marathon from 9AM to 3PM ET/PT.
Peter Thornton
Dana Elcar appeared as a guest star in the pilot episode. Richard Dean Anderson recommended him to the producers to join the show playing a different character. Elcar joined the series in the eleventh episode as Pete Thornton....When the onset of glaucoma began robbing co-star Dana Elcar of his sight in real life, Pete Thornton was given the same condition (www.imdb.com/title/tt0088559/trivia?ref_=tt_ql_2). MacGyver's boss and best friend, Pete Thornton is an ex-military Colonel who served in Vietnam before moving over to the Department of eXternal Services (DXS) where he spent time running the DXS office in Toulon, France before being promoted to Deputy Chief and then again shortly after to Executive Director. Several months later Pete took up the role of Director of Field Operations at the privately funded Phoenix Foundation.
Pete’s devotion to his work has cost him his marriage and has driven a wedge between him and his only child Michael, who has always resented that Pete was never around when he was growing up. Pete tried to make amends for this by letting Michael work alongside him at the Phoenix Foundation. Unfortunately, Michael's overwhelming resentment tempted him to betray Pete by stealing top-secret information for a crime ring. After getting caught red-handed by both Pete and MacGyver, Michael was forced to expose the rest of the co-conspirators.....There are two different versions of how he and MacGyver first met up, but both stories occurred while Pete was working for the DXS. The first story involves MacGyver saving Pete from quick-sand in the Nafud desert and then riding out on a camel for 6 days. The second story takes place while Pete was tracking the international assassin, Murdoc and MacGyver was driving Jack Dalton's taxi while Jack was laid up with both legs broken. It was after MacGyver saved Pete from Murdocs bazooka trap, that he convinced MacGyver to work part time for the DXS. Seven years later, Pete took the position of Director of Operations at the Phoenix Foundation.
In the sixth season of the show, Pete began to show symptoms of glaucoma, a degenerative condition of the eyes that causes the victim to lose his sight. Despite an operation to try and save his eyesight, he was legally blind in the seventh season, although he was still able to read printed text with the help of special computer equipment (www.macgyveronline.com/pages/Pete_Thornton.html#.Vqp-QvnhC70).
Pete: Jack, having you as a friend is a little bit like owning a pet disease.
Jack Dalton
Jack met MacGyver in high school, and traveled with both Mac and Mike Forester through Europe after they graduated. He settled in California, where he ran a short-lived taxi service before setting up a private airline, Fly-By-Night. Subsequent enterprises include Jack-Be-Quick Messenger Service, Dalton Air and his last known business, Dalton Air & Sea. Despite his numerous business failures, Jack remains optimistic that he'll some day make the big score.
Jack lived his life never know anything about either of his parents until late 1988, when Sam Greer, one of his father's original plane crew, started sending Jack some of his father’s possessions. Jack later tracked down and met his mother for the first time in Jan 1989, where he learned the truth about why he was given up for adoption.
Whenever Jack Dalton enters MacGyver's life, things always seem to get more complicated. He's always got something up his sleeve.
MacGyver can tell when Jack's lying because his left eye twitches.
In spite of all Jack's shortcomings and the problems he gets MacGyver into… he still remains one of MacGyver’s best friends, willing to drop everything at a moment's notice to help MacGyver when he needs it (www.macgyveronline.com/pages/Jack_Dalton.html#.Vqp9SPnhC70).
Penny Parker
An aspiring singer and actress, Penny is one of those people who, according to MacGyver, needs "looking after."
She first met MacGyver at a Bulgarian airport, where she slipped her jewelry (which was later revealed to be the stolen crown jewels) into MacGyver's pocket resulting in them both being detained for questioning by the police.
She appeared again in MacGyver’s life back in LA, when she "borrowed" Mac's apartment while he was out of the country and ended up dragging him into the middle of an assassination conspiracy.
Her perceived big break, came when she was cast in the leading role of a musical called Cleo Rocks. This however was merely an elaborate plan by hit man Murdoc to kill MacGyver.
Even though her scatter brained approach to life is a source of frustration for MacGyver, their friendship has always remained strong, and over the years grown into a brother-sister-like relationship (www.macgyveronline.com/pages/Penny_Parker.html#.Vqp8wPnhC70).
Murdoc
Michael Des Barres, who plays Murdoc, MacGyver's archenemy, actually composed the song "Cleo Rocks" for the same-named episode (www.imdb.com/title/tt0088559/trivia?ref_=tt_ql_2). Little is known about the international assassin Murdoc. He is, and has been, the best in his line of work; his methods are, in his own words, "quick, neat, untraceable." His mastery of makeup and costuming have made him difficult to identify, and he never leaves loose ends - except, of course, in the case of MacGyver and his friends.
Murdoc had been known to the DXS for about five years prior to 1980, when he attempted to kill Peter Thornton and MacGyver. This 1980 encounter resulted in Murdoc's apparent death in a collapsing building. He did not return until seven years later, when he nearly succeeded in blowing Mac and Pete up. Murdoc "died" in this confrontation, too, after being careless with dynamite. But somehow, he escaped the explosion, and he reappeared about a year later, to the surprise of a grieving MacGyver and Nikki Carpenter; again, he took a "fatal" dive off the mountain known as the Widowmaker after cutting his own climbing rope. The next time he tried to kill MacGyver, he staged an elaborate musical, "Cleo Rocks," using MacGyver's friend Penny Parker as a pawn. Posing as crippled director Jacques La Rue, he came very close to realizing his goal - only to be defeated, once again, by MacGyver's ingenuity. For his "death" this time, he plunged into a fiery pool after being electrocuted. Murdoc laid to rest his vendetta, albeit temporarily, against MacGyver when he realized that MacGyver was the only one who could help him rescue his sister, Ashton Cooke, from his vengeful ex-employer at HIT, Homicide International Trust. This spirit of cooperation between the two, however, did not last; after another of Murdoc's "deaths," he and MacGyver resumed their deadly game of cat-and-mouse...with Murdoc, yet again, plummeting into a flooded mine shaft. Murdoc's final regular-series appearance was as the right-hand man of a deposed Central American dictator who intended to regain power; Murdoc made his exit by driving a Jeep off of a cliff after a failed attempt to run MacGyver down.
Despite his nasty homicidal tendencies and twisted sense of honor, there are facets of Murdoc's personality that are quite likeable. The assassin is a photography buff; to assure his employers of a successful hit, he sends them a picture of the moment of the victim's death. He showed his talent for musical composition when he wrote the score for "Cleo Rocks," and he even fell in love with Penny Parker as he worked with her on the production. He secretly supported his sister, Ashton, without revealing to her his identity. If he hadn't become a hired killer, he probably would have chosen a career as a photographer or a musician (www.macgyveronline.com/pages/murdoc).
MacGyver is a different kind of hero: he doesn't use weapons, he's afraid of heights, and he's an expert at making complicated machines out of ordinary things quickly. He works in the employ of The Phoenix Foundation, a think tank dedicated to improving mankind. Pete Thornton gave MacGyver his assignments, occasionally getting involved himself or lending Foundation resources for MacGyver's various personal endeavors. Another sometimes accomplice was Jack Dalton, a long-time friend with a penchant for getting himself into trouble and relying on MacGyver for helping him out of it. MacGyver also had an archenemy, Murdoc, who sought to kill MacGyver many times, often through the use of ruses and elaborate traps. MacGyver's first name was a secret until the final season, when we learned just why he chose not to use it. MacGyver was produced by Henry Winkler/John Rich productions in association with Paramount Television (www.tv.com/shows/macgyver/).
Een typische aflevering van MacGyver:
"On a Wing and a Prayer" - excellent episode!!!
One of the episodes where MacGyver squares off against a woman as the main villian- it's happened before, but it's interesting to note.
The best part for me is that MacGyver comes to Jack Dalton asking for help in this episode. And Jack, being the good friend that he is, and also owing Mac a few hundred favors or so, gladly helps Mac out. I'd say he's quite delighted to be coming to MacGyver's rescue for once! And that's cool to see Mac and Jack working together as friends. And they come to rescue Pete! And Pete has a pretty hilarious quote in this episode- "Heck of a way to go, huh? I always thought I'd drop dead at my desk or on the 9th. hole."
And of course, MacGyver comes to the rescue with a neat MacGyverism at the end- making the plane ready for takeoff even though they don't have enough runway! And MacGyver flies economy at the end, holding on to the plane's landing gear for dear life! "JACK!!!!!!!"
This is one of the episodes I distinctly remember seeing as a child and thinking that MacGyver holding on to the plane and riding that way was so cool!
definitely an excellent episode!
Some time ago Men’s Health ran an article titled 32 Things You Can Do with Beer. Some of the things, like putting a cold beer near the thermostat to make the heater come on using beer as a compass or to loosen rusted bolts, while very MacGyver-esque, are a little far-fetched. Others, like using it to kill slugs or make beer bread are well known uses for our favorite beverage....MacGyver could probably escape from a Russian Gulag with a bottle of Baltika Parnassus but would he? I mean, he’s a smart guy. I’m thinking he could find a paper clip and a old shoe to serve as his means of escape and save the beer for after (http://beerutopia.com/things-macgyver-can-do-with-beer/).
In [2011 won] Richard Dean Anderson, television's MacGyver, has won a 20th anniversary New Belgium cruiser bike! From the way this reporter hears it "Mac" was at Sea Shepard's Stand Up for the Ocean comedy benefit and fundraiser (which we sponsored with some beer and of course a cruiser bike) and he placed the highest bid for that bike in the silent auction (www.newbelgium.com/community/Blog/new-belgium-brewing/2011/11/11/MacGyver-rides-a-New-Belgium-Cruiser).
Here's the thing: culture isn't about what you say; it's about what you do.
Company values that are posted to a corporation's website, or displayed on a poster in their lobby, don't get you too far when it comes to truly influencing the level of engagement & love that your workforce feels for the company. It takes a lot more dedication than that (www.newbelgium.com/Brewery/company/what-were-about).
We'll set the scene.
1989. Belgium. Boy on bike. (Ok, make that a young man of 32.)
As our aspiring young homebrewer rides his mountain bike with "fat tires" through European villages famous for beer, New Belgium Brewing Company was but a glimmer in his eye. Or basement. For Jeff Lebesch would return to Fort Collins with an imagination full of recipes and a handful of ingredients ready to embark on a whole new journey.
And then there was beer.
Jeff's first two basement-brewed creations? A brown dubbel with earthy undertones named Abbey and a remarkably well-balanced amber he named Fat Tire. To say the rest was history would be to overlook his wife's involvement. Kim Jordan was New Belgium's first bottler, sales rep, distributor, marketer and financial planner. And now, she's our CEO.
Electrical engineer meets social worker; ideals flourish
The other side of the New Belgium story might not seem as romantic as bicycling through Europe; but it gives testament to our dedication, hard work and continuous push for invention. It goes like this:
Jeff’s Belgian inspired brews garnered enough praise from friends and neighbors that Jeff and Kim took their basement brewery commercial in 1991. Kim, social worker by day and mother to two always, began the marketing process by knocking on their neighbor's door. Artist Anne Fitch was that neighbor, whose watercolors came to help craft the New Belgium brand for 24 years, including the original Fat Tire label. Our new Fat Tire cruiser is still handcrafted by a painter, Leah Giberson, but this time it's photorealism instead of a watercolor.
Bringing on Peter Bouckaert, a Belgian Brewmaster previously working at Rodenbach, in 1996 helped influence our love of sour beers. Moving forward, Peter would take the brewing reins as Jeff began pursuing other interests. In 2009, Jeff moved on completely and we have continued to flourish with Kim, Peter, and a team of dedicated employee-owners at the helm.
What else continues today?
The Core Values and Beliefs on which Kim and Jeff built New Belgium Brewing Company. Before they ever sold a bottle of beer, they hiked into Rocky Mountain National Park with a jug of home brew in one hand and a pen and pad in the other. Together, they wrote down what they wanted to instill into this business dream of theirs. New Belgium Brewing Purpose Statement:
To manifest our love and talent by crafting our customers' favorite brands and proving business can be a force for good (www.newbelgium.com/Brewery/company/history).

Stronzo Brewing Co. is a Danish micro brewery located in Gørløse, Denmark. We produce creative and innovative beer (https://stronzobeer.wordpress.com/). Stronzo brewing company (possibly not safe for work, if you live in a conservative country), of Copenhagen (I'm in Denmark, at the moment). The thing is, 'stronzo' is one of the Italian words for 'shit' (but is often used like the English 'arsehole'). The guys behind it are apparently Danish, but I have no idea of whether or not they know what 'stronzo' means (or whether they care), nor what (if they do know) they are thinking.
Statements like 'People with attitude' and 'Stronko.dk is in the air' are all over the site (and the billboard, which I didn't think to take a shot of), and their offerings include a 'Brown Stronzo', which does not exactly evoke a 'yum' response from me (it conjures up the liquid manure that's sprayed over fields as fertilizer), but then again, I'm not much of a beer drinker. They also describe themselves as an 'innovative microbrewery' brewing 'creative beer of the highest quality'....The name of this brewery is essentially "Shit Brewing Company" What else more do you need to know? MacGyver – Double IPA
Description
Building a brewery from scratch using used equipment is hard work. Hard work and quite a lot of MacGyver solutions… But somehow it works out anyway… That is why we decided to brew this decievingly drinkable and extremely tasty Double IPA using only duck tape, a safety pin and a piece of chewing gum. Kinda cool how the chewing gum really brings out flavours similar to the piney fruity american west coast hops….
