It was first established in 1923 and from 1996 exists in its present borders. It consists of seven districts /okresy/ and 354 municipalities, from which 15 have a town status. The economy of the region focuses more on agriculture, than in other Slovakian regions. Nitra is its seat, largest city and cultural and economic center (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nitra_Region).

Region Nitra is situated in the south-west of Slovakia and its southern part borders on Hungary. Its natural axis is the river Nitra that connects the northernmost and southernmost parts of the region. The metropolis of the region is Nitra - the cultural and economic centre of western Slovakia. Old churches (Dražovce, Kostoľany pod Tribečom) castles (Gýmeš, Hrušov) and manor houses (Topoľčianky) complement the cultural and historical monuments of the oldest Slovak town Nitra (http://slovakia.travel/en/nitra-administrative-region).

Deze regio bestaat uit de volgende districten (www.kamnapivo.sk/nitriansky-kraj/):
Nitra
Komárno
Levice

The city of Nitra is also the centre of whole region. The region - which is the warmest in Slovakia - reaches a high production of wheat, rye and vegetables. Significant industries are: the food industry, with breweries in Topoľčany, Nitra and Hurbanovo, are machinery (fridges in Zlaté Moravce, shipyards in Komárno) and energy (Mochovce Nuclear Power Plant) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nitra_Region).

Nitra (About this sound pronunciation (help·info); Latin: Nitria; German: Neutra (About this sound pronunciation (help·info)); Hungarian: Nyitra or Nyitria [archaic]) is a city in western Slovakia, situated at the foot of Zobor Mountain in the valley of the river Nitra. With a population of about 83,572, it is the fourth largest city in Slovakia. Nitra is also one of the oldest cities in Slovakia; it was the political center of the Principality of Nitra. Today, it is a seat of a kraj (Nitra Region) and an okres (Nitra District).
he first mention of Nitra dates back to 880 (other variations: 826 as Nitrawa, 880 as Nitra, and in 1111, 1113 as Nitra, Nitria). The name of the city is derived from the river Nitra. The name might originate in the Germanic word Nitrahwa, meaning "flowing water".
The city has a wealth of historic structures and natural beauty in its surroundings. The most well known points of interest are the Nitra castle, the old town and the adjacent hill, named Zobor, overlooking the city.
The old town (Staré Mesto) is dominated by the castle (Hrad), which is one of the most interesting ancient structures in Slovakia. Notable religious structures located in Nitra are St. Emmeram's Cathedral in Nitra castle, a Piarist church of St. Ladislaus and the adjacent monastery. The oldest church of the city is the Saint Stephen church, which was built in the 11th-12th century, although the foundation of the building was constructed in the 9th century.
Nitra is the home town of three popular slovak music bands Gladiátor, Horkýže Slíže, Desmod, Zoči Voči and Borra (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nitra).

Corgoň is a statue situated in Nitra, Slovakia. It was created by Vavrinec Dunajský (born 15 July 1784 in Ľubietová, died 15 February 1833 in Budapest) in 1820. The sculpture is a famous landmark and symbol of Nitra.
According to the local legend, the real person called Corgoň was a metalworker in Nitra. He was a mighty man of a stocky build, his arms were muscled in particular. Whenever he hit the anvil with a hammer, the whole upper town would quake. He influenced the history of his town when the Ottoman Turks besieged the Nitra Castle. The invaders were just about to climb the castle walls when Corgoň appeared straight from the forge. He started rolling down huge stones, which brought havoc among the Turks. However, what scared them off more than the stones was the gigantic and coal-black smoke-filmed face of Corgoň. Seeing him, they set off for an immediate run. He was believed to be seen extracting those huge stones from a slope assisted by evil spirits. That was how Nitra's upper town managed to survive the first Ottoman attack. The statue of Corgoň would embody the invincible power of this local metalworker forever. There is a simile applied to someone who shows great power in the area surrounding Nitra which says to be as mighty as Corgoň.
The artistic concept of the Atlas in Nitra lies in a symbolic holding up the entire floor, which might have its origin in a myth about Corgoň whose bravery kept the upper town safe from the Ottoman raids (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corgo%C5%88http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corgo%C5%88).

The Nitra Brewery started producing beer in 1896. It was eventually made into a public company and the name was changed to Karšay Brewery. In 1992 they created the Corgon brand. Five years later, the company was bought by Heneiken which helped it modernize and expand. In 2007, the beer moved its production to Brewery Hurbanovo.
In English Corgoň means “champion”. This made it a natural sponsor for many sporting events including Slovakia’s national football/soccer league and basketball league (www.slovakbeer.com/?p=232).

Komárno (Hungarian: Komárom, colloquially Révkomárom, Öregkomárom, Észak-Komárom, German: Komorn, Serbian: Komoran/Коморан) is a town in Slovakia at the confluence of the Danube and the Váh rivers. Komárno was formed from part of a historical town in Hungary situated on both banks of the Danube. Following World War I and the Treaty of Trianon, the border of the newly created Czechoslovakia cut the historical, unified town in half, creating two new towns. The smaller part, based on the former suburb of Újszőny, is in present-day Hungary as Komárom (the historical Hungarian town had the same name). Komárno and Komárom are connected by the Elisabeth Bridge, which used to be a border crossing between Slovakia and Hungary until border checks were lifted due to the Schengen Area rules.
Komárno is Slovakia's principal port on the Danube. It is also the center of the Hungarian community in Slovakia, which makes up roughly 60% of the town's population. The town is the historic seat of the Serbian national minority in Slovakia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kom%C3%A1rno).

Nové Zámky (Hungarian: Érsekújvár, German: Neuhäus[e], Turkish: Uyvar, Latin: Novum Castrum) is a town in southwestern Slovakia.
The town is located on the Danubian Lowland, on the Nitra River, at an altitude of 119 metres. It is located around 100 km from Bratislava and around 25 km from the Hungarian border. It is a road and railway hub of southern Slovakia.
The town has a distinguished history. From the second half of the 10th century until 1918, it was part of the Kingdom of Hungary. A fortress was built, against the Ottoman Turks, on the site of an older settlement in the years 1573–81. The town developed around the fortress. The huge new fortress was one of the most modern fortresses in Europe when it was built, a prime example of the star fortress which was considered to be adapted to the advance in artillery in the preceding centuries. (In fact, the Hungarian name means "the archbishop's new castle".)
The Turks failed to conquer it six times (except Turkish rule between 1566–1595 and 1605–1606 [and] 1663 -1685...The saying "Strong as a Turk in front of Nové Zámky", which means working with determination and stability, reflects the memory of conquest determination of the Turks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nov%C3%A9_Z%C3%A1mky).

Levice (Slovak pronunciation: [lɛvit͡sɛ], Hungarian: Léva, Hungarian pronunciation: [ˈleːvɒ]; German: Lewenz) is a town in western Slovakia. The town lies on the left bank of the lower Hron river. The Old Slavic name of the town was Leva, which means "the Left One" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Levice).

Topoľčany (Slovak: Veľké Topoľčany before 1920; Hungarian: Nagytapolcsány; is a town in the Nitra Region of Slovakia. ... The town's population is nicknamed Žochári (sing. Žochár) (producers, or owners of "mosses").
The name Topoľčany was assumed to be derived from topoľ, Slovak for poplar tree. Groves of these trees were once abundant on the banks of the Nitra River. However recent studies have shown that the name is derived from the Old Slavonic word topol meaning "warm, hot", for there were hot springs in the region in early medieval times.
A large army barracks is located in the town; during the Communist era there were about 2,000 troops stationed in the city. The surrounding forests are full of abandoned bunkers.
There are four main industries in Topoľčany: the Topvar brewery (owned by SABMiller), kitchen furniture producer Decodom, cableware producer SEWS (owned by a Japanese company), and the clothing company Ozeta (producer of suits and jackets). The large "ZTS" factory, a heavy machinery producer in neighboring Tovarníky, is no longer a major employer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Topo%C4%BE%C4%8Dany).

Topvar Breweries (Slovak: Pivovary Topvar, a. s.) is a beer brewing company in Slovakia. The company was created by the fusion of the Saris and Topvar breweries on 1 January 2007, after both were purchased by global brewing giant SABMiller in 2006.
The original Topvar Brewery was founded in 1957 and the first Topvar beer wes brewed in Topoľčany in 1964. Since 2010 beer brewing has been relocated to Veľký Šariš (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Topvar).

Hurbanovo (until 1948 Stará Ďala, Hungarian: Ógyalla, German: Altdala) is a town and large municipality in the Komárno District in the Nitra Region of south-west Slovakia. In 1948, its Slovak name was changed to Hurbanovo, named after Slovak writer Jozef Miloslav Hurban.
In historical records the town was first mentioned in 1329 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurbanovo). A brewery, called Zlatý Bažant, also operates in the town (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurbanovo).

Zlatý Bažant (Golden Pheasant) is a Slovak beer brand. It was founded in 1967 and is produced at its brewery in Hurbanovo. It was purchased by the Heineken International group in 1995. It is distributed in the United States and Canada under the name Golden Pheasant (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zlat%C3%BD_Ba%C5%BEant).

For some reason I always thought this beer was from Germany, Denmark, or the Netherlands. With a name like Golden Pheasant I would have never guessed it was from Slovakia. I stand corrected. Apparently, they are about the business of making a “premium quality lager beer.” I enjoyed the bottle design and labeling and thought I’d give it a try. The back label reads, “a golden pheasant in a field of ripen barley has always been a sign of a rich and bountiful harvest.” I always thought it meant a good hunting season, but heck, what do I know. I went to their website (which was in Slovakian) and apparently it’s called Zlaty Bazant. I did notice the name Heineken which tells me either they help brew or own this Slovakian company. Maybe that explains the green bottles, but unfortunately I do not read or speak the language so my research ends there (www.theperfectlyhappyman.com/golden-pheasant/).

Brewery Hurbanovo
Hurbanovo Brewery Slovakia
Novozámocká 2, 947 12 Hurbanovo
Founded in 1967, Zlaty Bazant (Golden Pheasant) Brewery was built in Hurbanovo. The location was carefully chosen because of it’s warm climate (the warmest in Slovakia) and its altitude (about 115 metres about sea level). These conditions made it ideal for growing hops. Furthermore, the water in the area is plentiful and of excellent quality. ....In 1971 they became the first beer company in Eastern Europe to package their beer in cans.
In 1995, the company merged with Heineken. This helped them expand further internationally and allowed them to update their malting house. Other Slovak brewers were purchased by Heineken and their productions was moved to the brewery in Hurbanovo. Today Hurbanovo has one of the largest malting operations in Europe with much of it being exported across the world.
Brands: Zlatý Bažant, Kelt, Corgoň, Martiner, Gemer (www.slovakbeer.com/?cat=3)

The Zlatý Bažant (Golden Pheasant) brand history dates back to 1969, when the brewery was founded in Hurbanovo. Due to their high quality of their beers, the brewery gained a strong reputation at home in Slovakia, and also abroad. In fact, Golden Pheasant has been the most exported (or licensed) Slovak beer consumed abroad for a considerable time (www.beerpubs.com/br182,Pivovar%20Hurbanovo).

Furthermore, the water in the heineken and zlaty bazant glassesarea is plentiful and of excellent quality. Production began in 1969 and it didn’t take long for the brewery to build a market. Having the newest brewing technology and high quality ingredients, allowed the brewery to penetrate the global market. In 1971 they became the first beer company in Eastern Europe to package their beer in cans. This transformation required a lot of work and ultimately resulted in the decision to become a joint stock company. In 1995, the company merged with Heineken. This helped them expand further internationally and allowed them to update their malting house. Other Slovak brewers were purchased by Heineken and their productions was moved to the brewery in Hurbanovo. Today Hurbanovo has one of the largest malting operations in Europe with much of it being exported across the world (www.slovakbeer.com/?p=40).

It is native to forests in mountainous areas of western China, but feral populations have been established in the United Kingdom and elsewhere. In England they may be found in East Anglia in the dense forest landscape of the Breckland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_pheasant).
