The bucket list

A list of activities someone wants to do before they die is often called a bucket list, because it is a list of things a person wants to do before they "kick the bucket." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bucket_list).

How did people start thinking of “buckets” in relation to death?  Probably the most popular theory is that it derived from the 1700’s, from the practice of standing a condemned person atop a bucket prior to tightening of the noose. Kick the bucket out from under the unfortunate, and – voila!  Out of death is born a new metaphor.
Two centuries later, the metaphor has been transformed into something more positive – the notion of piling on life satisfactions before said bucket is, inevitably, knocked over.

In “The Bucket List” movie, two terminally ill hospital roommates escape their institutional confinement in favor of completing of a shared bucket list.   Eyeing the initial entries made by his roommate Carter Chambers [Morgan Freeman], Edward Cole [Jack Nicholson] calls them “extremely weak,” advocating they instead go out with “some balls – with guns blazing.”  And when the pair first set off, our he-boys do indeed go for adrenalin – sky-diving, driving race cars, and going on an African safari.   Here and there, the film does touch on the larger issues the pair faces in their near-term deaths – among them, relationships, purpose and religious faith -- but with a light, sentimental touch that doesn’t get much below the surface.  Which is perhaps pitch-perfect for a road-trip movie, even one headed for the River Styx (http://realizemagazine.com/content/bucket-list).

Have you ever made a bucket list a list of fun or serious things to do before you'kick the bucket' [which is where the bucket list comes from]? Ever wanted to make such a list of the things you wanted to accomplish in your lifetime but actually didn't have the time to do such things? (http://community.beliefnet.com/dondiegodelavega/blog/2011/04/20/have_you_ever_made_a_bucket_list)

When I Googled “bucket list advice,” I got 10,800,000 hits – dwarfing my YouTube results.  You can also collect tips from Pinterest, at TheBucketListSociety.com or from challengelistcreator.com.  At Sharebuckets.com you can sign up to search the lists of members -- or share your own. - See more at: http://realizemagazine.com/content/bucket-list#sthash.PQNUDTN6.dpuf (http://realizemagazine.com/content/bucket-list).

Zo een lijst maken heeft verschillende redenen:
1. Thinking about your list will remind you of your 'why.' So often, we are consumed by 'how' to do something (how to have a better life, make more money, spend time with family, etc.). In the process we overlook why we want these things, in essence, if we don't know 'why', the 'how' makes little difference. The 'why' defines our purpose and helps to provide some motivation to persist in spite of the challenges along the way.
2. Periodically reviewing your list is a great way to re-energize. How often do we find ourselves so busy running on the 'hamster-wheel' of life that we lose sight of the bigger picture? By refreshing our perspective, we sharpen our focus and get back on track. Consider this: what are you more motivated to work for-what you want or what somebody else wants you to have?

Mental health counselor Kathleen Taylor,...insists that if we would honestly confront each day of our lives as though it were our last, said day “might not consist of jumping out of an airplane or completing a bucket list of adventures.”.....A bucket, by the way, can carry much more besides heart-thumping stunts.   Let’s give ourselves the benefit of the doubt and assume we already do have a sense of who we want to be. What’s wrong with a rundown of experiences to flesh that out some more?  Thankfully, to date I have no scary diagnosis to face down in the short term.  But for some of us – I have myself chiefly in mind here –  that assurance is not enough.  For me, list-making itself is daunting.
Perhaps that’s because the idea of any to-do listis problematic.   I am happier at the end of a day making lists of things I’ve gotten done – instead of checking them off against a column, their un-marked neighbors glaring back at me.   I have to admit, I probably do get more done on days I refer to a list of must-do’s. So I suppose I could accomplish more with the aid of some kind of personal inventory.   A list does make it more real, somehow, especially when the close of life seems way down the road, instead of bearing down on you from just over the hill.  Somewhere on an Internet chat I read a post noting that, “every rational person” must have a bucket list.” Oh.
A list does sound arbitrary, though.  A friend observed yesterday that things will of course change as we get up in age – at some point it really is too late to get up on a surf board.   So if I stop wanting to do some things, it might not just be wimping out.  I hope so, because at the age of 67, I’m still not going to put “becoming a pilot” back on my list (http://realizemagazine.com/content/bucket-list).

Op http://coolmaterial.com/feature/beer-bucket-list-2-0-30-beers-you-need-to-try-once/2/ is een vernieuwde  bucketlist geplaatst met bier: THE BEER BUCKET LIST (2.0): 30 BEERS TO TRY ONCE IN YOUR LIFETIME en dat is een hele lijst:
WESTBROOK GOSE (Gose • ABV: 4%)
Gose, a German-style of beer brewed with salt, only became popular in the U.S. over the last couple of years.
CANTILLON FOU’ FOUNE (Lambic • ABV: 5%)
So, while it was extremely difficult to select just one of their beers for this list, we went with our favorite: Fou’ Foune. The name comes from the nickname of Fançois Daronnat, an apricot grower who sent the first batch of apricots to Cantillon for the creation of this beer.
THE ALCHEMIST HEADY TOPPER (Double IPA • ABV: 8%)
Heady Topper remains one of the most sought-after beers in the country. The Double IPA lives up to the hype. Packed with a juicy nose and just the right amount of bitterness
WEIHENSTEPHANER HEFEWEISSBIER (Hefeweizen • ABV: 5.4%)
The German Hefeweizen is a style that American craft brewers have shied away from. ...It’s not some rare beer you have to attend a bottle release to get; it’s just good.
HILL FARMSTEAD ABNER (Double IPA • ABV: 8.2%)
To keep this from becoming a Hill Farmstead lovefest, we’re picking one: Abner. The Double IPA is the finest we’ve had. Bursting with fruit and pine notes, Abner is the kind of IPA worthy of the trip through the back roads of Vermont. And for all the warranted hype Heady, Pliny, Second Fiddle, and other DIPAs receive, Abner is our personal favorite. Basically, drive to the brewery and try whatever they have, and if it’s Abner, you’re in for something really special.
DE STRUISE PANNEPOT (Quad • ABV: 10%)
Among the things that have happened since the last Beer Bucket List published was our trip to Belgium. It was epic. And for all the Cantillon and abbey ales we consumed, one beer surprised us more than any other: Pannepot. De Struise’s first foray into “extreme” beers has a caramel complexity.
GOOSE ISLAND BOURBON COUNTY BRAND STOUT (Imperial Stout • ABV: 13.8%)
Listen, all the variants could make the list, especially the Vanilla Rye that had fans in a tizzy this past year, but we’re sticking with the classic. It’s the beer that makes Black Friday meaningful to beer nuts. The bourbon aroma warms your insides before you even take a sip of the the thick and creamy stout.
BELL’S EXPEDITION STOUT (Russian Imperial Stout • ABV: 10.5%)
It’s not hard to find, but it is crazy delicious. As one of the earliest Russian Imperial Stouts in the U.S., it set the bar for many brewers. While there are crazier RIS bottles to be had, Expedition Stout, with its chocolatey aroma and silky body, is accessible perfection.
THREE FLOYDS ZOMBIE DUST (Pale Ale • ABV: 6.2%)
Whether you consider it a pale ale, like Three Floyds claims it is, or an IPA, you have to admit Zombie Dust is fantastic. It’s an intensely aromatic beer full of pineapple and other tropical fruit. Juicy and a perfect example of the Citra hop’s brilliance.
SAISON DUPONT (Saison • ABV: 6.5%)
It’s really worth traveling to Belgium to have this on tap. It’s a different beer than the green bottle you’re used to. One of the shining examples of the saison style, the beer is funky, citrusy, and tart.
RUSSIAN RIVER PLINY THE ELDER (Double IPA • ABV: 8%)
Pliny the Elder is exquisitely balanced with notes of pine and citrus.
FOUNDERS CBS (Imperial Stout • ABV: 10.6%)
This year saw the return of one of the most sought-after beers around: Founders Canadian Breakfast Stout. And while many rare beers don’t live up to the hype, Canadian Breakfast Stout exceeds it. Brewed with chocolate and coffee and aged in bourbon barrels that housed maple syrup—hence the “Canadian” part of the name—CBS is smooth and sweet. No bottles this time around,
MAINE BEER CO. DINNER (Double IPA • ABV: 8.2%)
One of the finest new beers we’ve tasted over the last couple of years, Dinner, from Maine Beer Company, is a Double IPA with an aroma that explodes out of the bottle.
DRIE FONTEINEN OUDE GEUZE VINTAGE (Gueuze • ABV: 6%)
Not to be confused with simply old bottles of Oude Geuze, Oude Geuze Vintage, which has been produced since 2002,
CIGAR CITY HUNAHPU’S IMPERIAL STOUT (Imperial Stout • ABV: 11%)
Only brewed once a year and released at Cigar City, Hunahpu’s Imperial Stout is a chocolate wonder. Aged on cacao nibs, Madagascar vanilla beans, ancho chilis, and cinnamon, it’s the beer version of a cup of Mexican hot chocolate
FUNKY BUDDHA LAST SNOW (Porter • ABV: 6.5%)
Funky Buddha is one of the breweries that’s stormed onto the scene since the first Beer Bucket List published. ...While Maple Bacon Coffee Porter may have received the most press, Last Snow is our pick from their incredible lineup. It tastes like a Samoa Girl Scout cookie.
PLINY THE YOUNGER (Triple IPA • ABV: 11%)
Yes, we’ve woken up at the buttcrack of dawn to stand in line for Pliny the Younger, Pliny the Elder’s beefed up relative.
WESTVLETEREN 12 (XII) (Quad • ABV: 10.2%)
When multiple publications declared Westy 12 the best beer in the world a few years back, beer fans booked tickets to Belgium in droves. ...Well, it is really good; we’re not sure if it’s best beer in the world good, but it is a trappist gem. If you can’t get your hands on a bottle, you can still receive a half-check on your list by drinking St. Bernardus Abt 12, which is basically the same beer.
THE BRUERY BLACK TUESDAY (Imperial Stout • ABV: 19.2%)
The Bruery puts out a lot of big, bold gems, and none is finer than Black Tuesday. It’s thick, like pouring paint down your gullet, and loaded with flavor. You’ll get a ton of bourbon when you take a whiff, and that’s a good thing, if you ask us. Making your way through the alcohol burn, you’ll find coffee, fruit, and other rich notes. At 19%, it’s dangerous, but definitely worth a try.
DIEU DU CIEL PÉCHÉ MORTEL (Imperial Stout • ABV: 9.5%)
It’d be remiss of us to not include something from our beer-brewing neighbors from the north, and none is finer than Péché Mortel from Brasserie Dieu du Ciel. The stout, whose name means “Mortal Sin,” has a wonderful bitter coffee profile thanks to the fair trade beans used in brewing it. Creamy and luxurious with more bitterness than others deliver, which makes it an interesting Imperial Stout.
THREE FLOYDS DARK LORD (Russian Imperial Stout • ABV: 15%)
While it’s billed as a Russian Imperial Stout, Dark Lord is really in a category all its own. The aroma and taste are unlike anything we’ve ever had. Some might have said soy sauce-y or too sweet, but we think it’s just really interesting. Whether you end up loving it or hating it, you need to try it.
JACK’S ABBY KIWI RISING (Imperial Pilsner • ABV: 8.5%)
We’re not just throwing this on here because it’s delicious; we’re throwing Kiwi Rising on this list because it’s proof pilsners can be exciting. This is not the mass-produced pilsner you drank before you turned 21. Hoppy like an IPA and crisp like a pilsner, Kiwi Rising is truly fantastic.
TRAPPISTES ROCHEFORT 10 (Quad • ABV: 11.3%)
Few things are better than a great trappist brew you can find without too much difficulty. In a world of bottle release lines and trade forums, it’s nice to be able to drink something truly perfect without having to plan a vacation around acquiring it. Packed with a beautiful balance of brown sugar, dark fruit, and other classic quad notes, Trappistes Rochefort 10 is a masterpiece.
NEW GLARUS R&D WILD PEACH (Wild Ale • ABV: 7.25%)
New Glarus gives peach the spotlight here. Tart, funky, kinda sweet, and very peachy.
TOPPLING GOLIATH KENTUCKY BRUNCH BRAND STOUT (Imperial Stout • ABV: 12%)
Toppling Goliath. With beers like PseudoSue, SR-71, and King Sue, they seem to crank out world-class brews on the regular. For this list, we’re going with their finest—and, most likely, hardest to get: Kentucky Brunch Brand Stout. The velvety stout is loaded with coffee and vanilla and has a mouthfeel that’s unparalleled. On a list of difficult beers to track down, this might be one of the trickiest.
ALLAGASH WHITE (Witbier • ABV: 5%)
A great beer doesn’t have to be incredibly strong or impossible to find; Allagash White will always be our go-to beer when we want something easy-drinking and flavorful. It’s the best American interpretation of a Belgian wheat beer.
RUSSIAN RIVER CONSECRATION (Wild Ale • ABV: 10%)
All of Russian River’s sours are tremendous. We were torn between Consecration and Supplication but opted for the one we prefer ever so slightly. The dark sour ale is aged in local Cabernet Sauvignon barrels with some black currants. What emerges is a full-bodied, strong sour with spectacular fruit notes. Listen, you really can’t go wrong with any of Russian River’s sours...
RODENBACH CARACTÈRE ROUGE (Flanders Red Ale • ABV: 7%)
Rodenbach Caractère Rouge rests in oak on cherries, cranberries and raspberries. Those tart and sweet berries come through in waves when you take a sip, and the finish is pleasant and long. It won’t become your everyday drinker—which is a good thing considering how rare it is...
HAIR OF THE DOG ADAM FROM THE WOOD (Old Ale • ABV: 12%)
We are going to put their second most interesting brew on the list, however. Adam From The Wood is a barrel-aged version of the brewery’s killer old ale, Adam. While it’s also tough to acquire, it’s not like sending you out there for Dave. If you can’t find it, try to find Cherry Adam From The Wood.
FOUNDERS KBS (Imperial Stout • ABV: 11.2%)
While not as hard to come by as CBS, KBS is still a brew that requires a little forethought to procure. After sitting in oak bourbon barrels for a year—hence the “Kentucky” part of its name—KBS emerges with a boozy sweet bourbon profile that’s packed with roasted coffee notes.
