Tui 125 (126)

Here in New Zealand, there is a beer called Tui. Their slogan is 'Yeah right'. This is their latest advertisement (www.reddit.com/r/funny/comments/16flbk/here_in_new_zealand_there_is_a_beer_called_tui/).

Given Tui’s recent history of covert plumbing activities, dishing out wads of cash at cricket and offending just about everyone in New Zealand with its infamous billboards, there was a sense of expectation that DB Breweries was planning something big for the 125th anniversary of the East India Pale Ale. And after a relatively quiet period, presumably planning the campaign, Tui has kicked off the celebrations with a new TVC via Saatchi & Saatchi NZ.
Released on 4 May, the new spot plays out like an ode to the original handheld device, the beer glass.
Throughout the 30-second running time, the narrator draws a satirical parallel between modern mobile devices and beer glasses, explaining that “125 years ago people imagined a device that was handheld, interactive, with a shiny glass façade that allowed them to connect with their mates.” (http://stoppress.co.nz/blog/2014/05/tui-kicks-its-125th-anniversary-presents-beer-glass-original-handheld-device)

2012: Lobby group sets sights on taking down 'retro-sexist' Tui ads
A new Auckland lobby group has launched a campaign to get Tui to withdraw its beer ads featuring an all-female brewery.
Tui is often singled out for pushing the boundaries with its tongue-in-cheek PC-busting billboards tapping into hot topics and for supposedly using sex to sell beer with the Tui brewery girls.
“These ads are retro-sexist,” said Feminist Action spokeswoman Leonie Morris. “They mimic tired old sexist attitudes in an ironic way. They are funny only to people who are happy to laugh at put-downs of women.”
Retro-sexism, she says, promotes a form of mateship that dismisses women’s concerns and trivialises relationships with women.
She slammed the Tui brewery ads for featuring women in skimpy clothes and sexualised poses, whom she said were relentlessly depicted as more stupid than the dorky group of men who try to infiltrate the brewery.
“The ads say that men should judge women just on how they look, that women are stupid and that it’s okay to laugh at them." (http://idealog.co.nz/venture/2012/02/tui-beer)
