Smoke gets in your beer – Archipelago creates Asia’s first smoked IPA 0 | June 2nd, 2011 |
Enjoying a pint of India Pale Ale is an acquired taste, given its tendency for being very hoppy, dry and bitter. And often with a higher alcohol level. If you’re new to the world of IPA, don’t start your session with one and don’t try chugging a few down at a sitting. ...The Archipelago Hickory Smoked IPA is a unique hybrid of beer styles, the popular English India Pale Ale & the German smoked Rauchbier styles, with American hops, resulting in a beer tasting closer to the American IPAs that the English. Making this brew was a collaboration with Smokey’s BBQ restaurant (located at 73 Joo Chiat Place) where the Hickory wood chips used by Smokey’s BBQ, an authentic smokehouse restaurant, to smoke the malt to create this limited edition Hickory Smoked IPA.
Because it’s smoked, it’s got a beautiful amber glow and very aromatic. Made with a combination of three American hops – Centennial, Chinook & Tomahawk – which are all commonly used in a lot of American pale ales, the Hickory Smoked IPA has a savoury yet citrus taste. If you’re new to IPAs, it may need a few sips to start appreciating the smoky aftertaste on the palate and scents of smoky essences. Here’s a tip, have it at Smokey’s BBQ and pair it with their pulled pork, which is cooked over 18hours or even with a bowl of their chilli. It’s a perfect combination!
If you’re into the whiskeys like Oban, you’ll love this beer, the smoky aftertaste is quite similar.
The Archipelago Hickory Smoked IPA was created for Beerfest 2011 (http://175proof.com/)

An archipelago ... sometimes called an island group or island chain, is a chain, cluster or collection of islands. The word archipelago is derived from the Greek ἄρχι- – arkhi- ("chief") and πέλαγος – pélagos ("sea") through the Italian arcipelago. In Italian, possibly following a tradition of antiquity, the Arcipelago (from medieval Greek *ἀρχιπέλαγος and Latin archipelagus) was the proper name for the Aegean Sea and, later, usage shifted to refer to the Aegean Islands (since the sea is remarkable for its large number of islands). It is now used to refer to any island group or, sometimes, to a sea containing a small number of scattered islands (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archipelago).

Archipelago is a 2010 British film written and directed by Joanna Hogg about a family holiday on the island of Tresco, which forms part of the archipelago of the Isles of Scilly (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archipelago_(film)). Deep fractures within a family dynamic begin to surface during a getaway to the Isles of Scilly (www.imdb.com/title/tt1527835/).

The Archipelago Brewery is a Singapore brewery owned by Heineken Asia Pacific. Devoted to the art of brewing, Archipelago signature craft beers are uniquely Asian.
The Archipelago Brewery was established in 1931 and became the first commercial brewery in Singapore, started by Becks.
During World War II, the British deemed the brewery to be enemy territory due to its German ties and seized it in 1941. It was then bought by Malaysian Breweries (which later became part of Asia Pacific Breweries) in the same year. In 2013, Asia Pacific Breweries merged to become Heineken Asia Pacific.
The launch of Archipelago is consistent with Asia Pacific Breweries’ objectives to add a new dimension to Singapore’s beer industry; and to continue to grow its presence and stature locally. Archipelago Brewery produces boutique beers in small batches. The Archipelago Brewery currently produces four permanent beers: Belgian Wit, Summer Ale, Bohemian Lager and Irish Ale, as well as occasional limited edition brews (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archipelago_Brewery).

Beck's Brewery, also known as Brauerei Beck & Co., is a German brewery in the northern German city of Bremen. Beck's is the world's best selling German beer, sold in nearly 90 countries (although no longer brewed exclusively in Germany). Owned by local families until February 2002, the Beck's brewery was then sold to Interbrew ... Beck's ranks fifth among Germany's best selling breweries. Beck's Brewery is owned by the Belgian beverage and brewing company Anheuser-Busch InBev. Beck's in Bremen is the logistic German Headquarters of InBev. All advertising and logistics for the companies owned by InBev Germany is steered from there for this market.
he brewery was formed under the name Kaiserbrauerei Beck & May o.H.G. in 1873 by Lüder Rutenberg, Heinrich Beck and Thomas May. In 1875, Thomas May left the brewery which then became known as Kaiserbrauerei Beck & Co.
Beck's logo, a silver key on a red shield, is the mirror image of the coat of arms of Bremen. Since Beck's is located on the river of a port city, it was easy to ship out its product to the world at large. Beck's is known for its pilsner consisting of two-row, spring barley from the south of England, yeast, water from the "Rotenburger Rinne" and Hallertau hops from southern Germany.
Although Beck's marketing material claims that it follows the strict Reinheitsgebot, the German Purity Law of 1516 by the Duke Albrecht the Fifth of Bavaria, as with virtually all modern beers, cultured yeast is an ingredient, which was later approved in an amendment to the original purity law. Beck's was the first German beer company to use green bottles, while in the United States it was the first to be served in 24oz bottles now known as bombers. The term bomber is taken from Beck's early advertising where the 24oz bottle is referred to as a Beck's bomber (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beck%27s_Brewery).

Heineken Asia Pacific, formerly Asia Pacific Breweries (APB) is an Asian brewery company founded as Malayan Breweries Limited (MBL) in 1931, in a joint venture between Heineken International and Fraser and Neave, it was renamed to Asia Pacific Breweries (APB) in 1989 and given its present name after merging with Heineken Asia Pacific in 2013.
In 1931, Fraser & Neave formed a joint venture with Holland’s Heineken to venture into the brewing business. The brewery, Malayan Breweries Limited produced Tiger Beer, and later acquired Archipelago Brewery, which produced Anchor Beer.
In 1990, Malayan Breweries changed its name to Asia Pacific Breweries.
In 2004, APB acquired 90% of DB Breweries. In August 2012, Fraser & Neave has accepted an offer from Heineken to acquire its stake in APB for US$4.1 billion. In 2013, APB was merged with Heineken Asia Pacific and was renamed to Heineken Asia Pacific to reflect their role as Heineken's regional hub (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heineken_Asia_Pacific).

Archipelago Brewery announces today the launch of Asia’s first smoked IPA. The Archipelago Hickory Smoked IPA is a unique hybrid of beer styles, the popular English India Pale Ale & the German smoked Rauchbier styles (http://theneodimension.com/archipelago-brewery-announces-today-the-launch-of-asia%E2%80%99s-first-smoked-ipa/).

Hickory Smoked IPA - Hybrid of India Pale Ale & Rauchbier. Hickory wood chips used to smoke the malt (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archipelago_Brewery). This limited edition hybrid beer is the result of a collaboration between Archipelago and Smokey’s BBQ smokehouse restaurant - and we do so love the ribs there - where hickory wood chips are used by Smokey’s BBQ to smoke the barley malt at the start of the brewing process. The result is an incredibly smoky and hoppy brew that combines the styles of English India Pale Ale and smoked German rauchbier. It’s not the latest new-fangled idea in beer-making, however - smoked beer existed since the 18th century, and originated from Germany (http://danandesther.tumblr.com/post/45182947504/smoke-gets-in-your-beer-archipelagos-smoked-i) (http://justinlee.sg/2011/06/05/launch-of-asias-first-smoked-ipa-the-archipelago-hickory-smoked-indian-pale-ale/).

This innovative hybrid idea was made even more interesting with a collaboration between Archipelago and Smokey’s BBQ. Hickory wood chips were used by Smokey’s BBQ, an authentic smokehouse restaurant, to smoke the malt to create this limited edition Hickory Smoked IPA. Crafted from a combination of three American hops – Centennial, Chinook & Tomahawk – the final product is an amber pour that delivers an underlying aroma of grapefruit. The brew leaves a tinge of smoke aftertaste on the palate and scents of smoky essences, which is the result of a smoking procedure performed on the barley Malt at the initial stages of the brewing process.
Colin Paige, Brewmaster of Archipelago Brewery said: “Singapore, a cosmopolitan country has a mixed presence of exotic local dishes, spices and heavy European style dishes. The wide variety of cuisines and varied palates make this the ideal place to launch a smoked beer with such high flavour intensity” (http://theneodimension.com/archipelago-brewery-announces-today-the-launch-of-asia%E2%80%99s-first-smoked-ipa/).

Touted to have German origins, smoked beers were first developed in the 18th century in Bamberg and due to its strong flavour, typically pair well with strong flavoured food items such as smoked bacon and salami ... Indeed, the smokey flavour was very distinctive and paired extremely well with any smoked meats. Very appealing and innovative! (www.missuschewy.com/2011/06/23/the-archipelago-hickory-smoked-ipa-smoke-gets-in-your-beer/)

De Hickory Smoked IPA zou de eerste Aziatische rook-IPA zijn. Toch een stukje biergeschiedenis. En wie zegt dat Heineken geen speciaalbier brouwt?
